January 09, 2010
This morning around 4:27 a.m. the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire at Briar Leigh Court Apartments on North Main Street in Hillsville.  After Emergency Services Personnel arrived on scene they saw heavy smoke and flames visible from in behind the Apartments.  Thankfully after the Carroll County Sheriff Department and Virginia State Police, and Hillsville Police Department arrived on scene, all occupants were removed from the building and transported to safety.  After several hours of battling the fire, the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department with help from Galax Volunteer Fire Department, and Laurel Fork Volunteer Fire Department was able to extinguish the Fire.  Also special thanks goes out to all the Local Restaurants in Hillsville for showing their support in donating food for members, also to American Red Cross For providing personnel to staff the Emergency Shelter that was established at V.F.W. Post 1115 in Hillsville.  Also thanks goes out to Cana Volunteer Fire Department for being on stand-by at Hillsville Fire Station 1 with man-power and equipment.  Also thanks to all Emergency Medical Services, as well as Surry County EMS and Surry County Fire Department, for providing ambulances and equipment to help safely transport the residents to safety.  Also many thanks to the Carroll County School Board for their use of their building and providing emergency heat that was well need for the members on scene of the fire.
