February 05, 2009
On February 05, 2009 around 2:30PM ,the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department was toned out to a possible structure fire at 62 Oxford lane in Woodlawn Va. While the Fire Department was on the way to the scene they noticed a heavy cloud of thick black smoke in the distance, and as members arrived on scene it was fully involved with heavy smoke and flames.
It was the home of Joe Chappell and Jolynn Griffith according to Joe Griffith he was home working in the kitchen and the couples two year old girl was sleeping in the back bedroom, when he smelled smoke he said that he went out to the front door and opened the door that's when the fire rolled out over his head so he rushed to the bedroom to get his baby and then exited out the back door to safety. He had no ideal how the fire started but was very thankful he and his little girl was able to escape.
The firefighters fought this fire hard in 14 degrees weather and to add to it this trailer had an add on room and a shingle roof added to it, which trapped the fire between the roof of the trailer and the shingle roof.  Also thanks the to Galax Volunteer Fire Department who were called to assisted in helping put out the fire.  Also Cana Volunteer Fire Department responded to Station One and were on stand-by while Fire Departments Battled the blazing Mobile Home.
