Winter Weather Creates Hazardous Road Conditions in Carroll County




March 1, 2009, around 1:50 p.m. Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department members witnessed the above accident that happened on Fancy Gap Highway near the intersection of Madison Road. Two vehicles collided head-on, with the impact of the wreck sending one of the vehicles into a Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department. According to Virginia State Police, Kevin Shockley, 37, of Hillsville, who was operating a 2001 Dodge Pickup went sideways in the road and crossed the double solid lines, striking a 2007 Ford Escape head-on operated by J.R. Montgomery, of Fancy Gap. The impact of the collision knocked the Dodge pickup backwards into the path of an Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department four-door pickup operated by fire department members, striking the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department vehicle on the right side.
Kevin Shockley, Montgomery and Montgomery’s passenger, Linda H. Montgomery, were all transported to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. Where Shockley was later released and the Montgomery's were transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. with the extent of injuries unknown at the time of the report. The Virginia State Police handled the investigation of the accident.
